When her dating app decides she's a man, what's a lonely lesbian to do?
Jamie Richards is a scientist who embraces reason-- except when it comes to romance. Tired of her impulsive streak leaving her heartbroken, she's determined to do everything right the next time she's in love. But her resolve crumbles when a technical glitch matches her with perfection in Claire, a woman who lives on the opposite side of the country. Who is straight. And under the impression that Jamie's a guy. But Jamie can't help being smitten. Would one tiny lie be so terrible if it gets her closer to the woman of her dreams?

Claire Flores is a dreamer and a believer in signs, but she has a secret that keeps her cautious about love. All she wants is a picture-perfect family of her own, but she's never met a man who attracts her. Until now. Throwing caution to the wind, she goes from Portland to Boston to meet Jay, her online love. Instead she meets Jamie, his work colleague, who befriends her in Jay's unexpected absence. Claire's heart is aflutter. Jamie stirs up feelings Claire never knew possible, but how close can she get without having to admit that she's been lying to herself about her dreams all along?

What starts as a simple fib soon snowballs as Jamie fabricates increasingly ridiculous tales to keep her identity as Jay under wraps, until a comedy of errors threatens to topple the whole charade to the ground. Can true love prevail when it's founded on a lie?

Telling Lies Online Miranda MacLeod 9781530355792 Books

Telling Lies Online is a book that took me by surprise, because I related to it so hard. I am Claire. I was raised to believe that homosexuality was a sin, and, as such, it was never within the realm of possibility for me. The plan for my future revolved around a husband and children, and it wasn't until I was 39 that I realized there were other possibilities out there.
I know many people will think that this story line, especially Claire's part of it, is unrealistic, but it is possible to be so short on self-awareness that one lives a lie for a very long time. My hope for this book is that it finds more readers like me, who need to know that they are not alone in their obliviousness.

Telling Lies Online Miranda MacLeod 9781530355792 Books Reviews

I really loved this book! At first, I was really annoyed about the lies Jamie told to Claire, but it all ends up working out in a HEA. The characters were all quite believable, as was the storyline. The book will take you through a journey of emotions, and will leave your heart in a puddle (in a good way) after reading the final pages. I'm excited to read more by this author!
I think that my review might be lower than most, but I really had a problem with the whole point that this story began with one of main character's being deceitful and she had numerous opportunities to get honest, but always made the poor choice to keep lying. If I had been the recipient of those lies, I probably would never have gotten past this.

The writing was good, but I can't say that I liked the characters so I can only give this an "okay" rating.
To say that this was one of my favourite romances of the year would be an understatement. This book went from "OK, I'll try that one... it's not too expensive" to "Oh my GODS I'm loving this!!!" in the first chapter, and it never let go.

What separates this book from other lesbian-themed romances is that it has a strong sense of humour. This tends to be missing from far too many in the genre, which makes "Telling Lies Online" really stand out. Additionally, it's humour comes from the characters, not from a "slipping on a banana-peel" absurdity. This gives it a grounding in realism, which makes it all the more hilarious. The characters are fully fleshed out and believable, and the reader winds up falling in love with them, as well as the protagonists.

I will certainly be getting Miranda's other books (I just bought "A Road Through The Mountains"), having added her to my list of "must read" authors (along wit Radclyffe and Gerri Hill). A stunning first effort!
Telling Lies Online is Miranda MacLeod's first novel, but it is so well written and well paced that I can hardly believe she hasn't published before! I absolutely love when I can read a story without choppy writing, incorrect and/or missing words. This is truly well-written and allows the reader to immerse themselves in the story. TLO introduces us to Claire (who looks for divine "signs" to show her the right path) and Jamie Lee, aka Jay (who is an analytical Scientist). We follow our leading ladies from Oregon to Boston as they try to interpret the "signs" on the journey to love. I don't want to give anything away, but I don't think you can go wrong with purchasing this light-hearted and sweet read. I truly enjoyed this novel and I am very much looking forward to the release of MacLeod's next novel, A Road Through the Mountains. I also need to find out if there are penguins in Madagascar! If you are looking for a well-written, light and sweet read look no further and get your copy of Telling Lies Online!
Normally I'd give this quality of writing a 3 or even 4 star review, but I struggled with the main concept of deceit by one of the main characters. I have to say, that killed the book for me.

I like the other books I've read of MacLeod's. They are fun romances with interesting ideas. She creates characters who have different jobs and are written like regular woman rather than superwomen. So if you've not ready any of MacLeod's books, try some of the others first.
3.5 stars. First attempt to read this book, I failed and read a different book. But then I gave it another try and once I got 30% through, I was somewhat committed to completing it. I personally struggled with the premise, the deceit seemed to go on for too long and I felt the relationship was built on lies. However, that's the title of the book, so I should have expected that. By the end of the book, I did like the characters although I didn't really relate to either of them.
I'd try a different book by the same author as I did like her writing style and the book was still a good read.
What a wonderful new author, I really enjoyed her first book and will be buying her next. The story of Jamie and Claire was a bit far fetched, a modern day twist, with almost a Sleepless in Seattle type feel. The characters were not predictable in that although Jamie seemed the more sure of herself, it was Claire who showed the most inner strength, all the while dealing with the twenty plus years of damage done to her by her aunt who manipulated the memory of her parents to mold and control the young woman.

The secondary characters in the book were good and helped move the story along, my only suggestion would have been to give Claire's sister a bit more; I understood her impact but would have enjoyed the narrative with more dialog from her.
