Megacorp didn’t coin the term ‘black ops’, but the one they brought into being was darker than anyone could imagine. After a time of trial and err, the recruits began filling cold steel slabs. Megacorp was laying in a workforce; not only to maintain the failing infrastructure of the planet, but to do the black work, the wet work, that comes along with being a black op for the biggest power on earth. They were making Reuseables and working them to death, bringing them back to life to be used again. To be reused again and again.
The quest for profits already left the planet, as a biosphere, crippled. Now it was doing the same thing to people’s minds. Siphoning off the skills they wanted to keep the planet running, Megacorp turned the rest of the population into domesticated consumers. Instant gratification ruined them, leaving behind a coke monkey mentality that was a button push away from satisfaction. And was one hell of a profit maker.
This consumer mentality came at a cost. The virtual world was scarfing up everyone. No one wanted to be or to do anything anymore, outside the box that is. We had begun living a virtual existence. Unfortunately all the apps in the world can’t fix a leaky pipe.
The epic tale comes full circle with this macabre prequel of corporate greed and the life of one man, hopelessly entangled with the bottom line and a cruel form of servitude. We meet Jake while he is still a ‘normal diver’, following him through the boredom and adventures that come with a life of commercial diving. After a few incidents where Jake unknowingly comes face to face with his future, the future – never all that patient – comes to him. Jake will soon discover what hell is like, becoming it in order to survive. He meets Johnny for the first time and the tall Italian aids Jake, with a certain dark savoir faire, through the hell business. It wasn’t much, just barely enough to save Jake from choking on the chain that was placed around his neck. The trick was not losing your mind. Which is much more difficult than it sounds when you discover your life has been taken away and replaced with… hell everlasting.

"Black Tide" is the third novel in John Rees' series, and while often times the third book in any series falls short, this novel does anything but that. It continues the story of Jake Strom, a diver who gets caught up with Megacorp as they want him to be a "Reusable". With a mix of suspense and humor for much-needed comic relief (after all, it is a horror story), it makes for a very enjoyable read. It is fast-paced, but slows down when necessary to provide adequate detail, since the supernatural topic of "Reusables" can get quite confusing. Rees really focuses on what is important in the novel, but doesn't forget about the background and setting.I loved the scenes with Jake's diving, as you can tell that Rees is very experienced with this subject. The writing really comes alive at these moments, and while the rest of the novel can hold its own, these moments helped make it all the more fun to read.
The character of Jake is someone who you want to be best friends with, which serves as a testament to Rees' writing. Through quick dialogue, you really get a sense of Jake's sarcasm and humor, which makes him a realistic and dynamic protagonist.
Dealing with politics and morality, this novel covers a wide spectrum of topics that will please many audiences.

This is a thrilling prequel to John Rees's other stories about Megacorp, such as "Anoxic Zone". In a corporate future straight out of Noam Chomsky's worst nightmare, ranks of "reusable" humans are worked to death, then resurrected and prodded into hard labour once again. This is what economic efficiency looks like in a future dominated by the Umbrella-esque Megacorp, which has sucked up municipalities and legal systems alike, ruining minds and dumbing down the populace.
Jake Strom is a diver. It's a tough job, especially for a geezer of thirty-five. However, it turns to be peanuts in comparison to the horrible events and confrontations that await him and his small circle of friends in this book. Can their technological nous cripple Megacorp once and for all?
BLACK TIDE by John G Rees is a three hundred and fifty-two page, first person, past tense, horror novel. I have not read any of his other books however that will change. You are sucked right into the story. I finished it in two sittings and could not wait to get back to it. It is a fast-paced and gripping book.
Jake Strom is one of the best commercial divers around. The character is likable, honorable and trustworthy. And for this story those are just the sort of attributes that are his downfall after Megacorp gets their hands on him. Their idea of a promotion is to become a part of their Reusable Program, risky and murderous work that humans cannot do. As a vampire you have heightened abilities in your field of work and can put in endless hours, like a slave. Jake must learn to live with the horror and guilt of his new life, and struggles to keep even the slightest bit of humanity.
I picked up this book, with its mysterious title, having enjoyed another of Rees's works. The "black tide" in question turns out to be the largest oil spill ever in human memory. It turns the Gulf region into a dead zone, destroys the fishing industry and forces activists out onto the street. A huge floating barrier contains the worst of it, but ten percent of the planet has been effectively destroyed by human greed.
Meanwhile, Megacorp, whose motto could be "Do be evil", has quietly established monopolies in the fields of oil and water. Their control over these vital resources grants them the sort of geoeconomic power that can grasp the world in its scaly fist. They smuggle drugs, operate private armies and stifle native politics. In these nightmarish, almost post-apocalyptic circumstances, only a handful of embattled heroes can save liberty and slice Megacorp's all-embracing tendrils. Expect a fun ride.
In this prequel to Anoxic Zone and Halocline John G Rees answers all of the questions that you may have had. He shows us how it all began. Learn how the concept of reusable humans came into being, we suffer with them as they are worked to death and revived to do it all over again. This is where you learn of Jake and Johnny's lives before they became vampires for the corporation. Many men like Jake that had the knowledge, skill and experience were being recruited for a special operation, little did they know that this would be the last job they would ever sign on for.
John G Rees writing is masterful, he drags you in and you get immersed in this world that is terrifyingly real. He takes politics and morality to an entirely new level. When does making a profit at the expense of others become too much for the people to stand? Where greed exists can there also be moral standards? These are the questions this book poses and quite literally shows the reader what can happen when morals are thrown out the window. If you like books that make you think then this is a great one.
