"No matter how far a journey of self-discovery moves a person, it can only end in one place."I decided to walk the length of the west coast of the United States by following the mountains of the Pacific Crest Trail in 2009. By the time my journey was completed I did not recognize myself, for not only had I grown, I had become a stranger to the man who set out with a soul full of foolhardy optimism from the Mexican Border in late April. So much time to reflect, so many isolated hours spent gazing into the depths of myself and my innermost thoughts. This was my journey, this was what drove me away from a normal path in life and into that of the modern nomad.Visit joeyshonka.com today!

An American Nomad Joey Shonka 9781508850274 Books Reviews

Thru-hiking is not for the faint of heart and Shonka takes it to yet another level. Weaving the tale of trail with his own reflections and musings, this book is a great read for anyone with an interest in the Pacific Crest Trail, from hikers and aficionados to those just curious to know what happens out there, on the trail and in the mind of a hiker.
Not one of my favorite hiking books. I had a hard time with the inconsistencies between his faith his actions. Some of his decisions seemed a little strange.
I really enjoyed Mr Shonka's latest book on the Pacific Crest Trail.
I've read a few books on the pct thru hiker. I'm putting this in one of my top three. What an adventure. Thanks for sharing Joey!
This book, if you are a hiker, strikes a chord to me. It held my interest and I enjoyed his adventure
Interesting reading. Great book. I enjoyed it very much.
A troubled man sets off on a journey along the West Coast to find God and his own self - on foot. Good enough material for a book, right? But there is so much more to "American Nomad". On our hands, or rather, on our s we have a great book, the scale of which is enormous.
In the most car-centered economy and culture the world has ever seen, and we're talking about America, where many towns don't even have sidewalks, where our biggest complaint of the day might be the unskilled barista that ruined our coffee, Shonka is struggling with real problems - dehydration as he walks through the desert, almost constant hunger, and physical pain. The struggle is self-inflicted, that's true, but the description of his daily hardship but also the beauty and goodness he experiences, makes you reflect on whether you are setting your life's priorities right.
I was instantly hooked to the book turned the pages one after the other, until I was sorry that it's over. Shonka has written a previous book about his journey along the Appalachian trail but this one, in my opinion, is much better and we also see that he has made great progress In his self-development, as well as in writing, because here, it is really great, direct, honest and touching. We get the feeling that he has really made his priority to hide nothing from us, to tell the whole thing, from physiological details, through anger, sex, and the exhilarating beauty of nature to his contact with God. It's an honesty I, as a reader, seldom experience and appreciate.
This is a story that shows in a micro-scale everything that is great and that is wrong with America. At night, near the Mexican border, Shonka is controlled by border patrol and crowds of illegal immigrants pass him by. There is the magnificent beauty of the nature but there's also graffiti on the rocks and poisoned wells; trash in the forest and areas which have burned down to ashes.
On a technical side, I particularly enjoyed the rhythms of each day and the descriptions of nature, which are the most touching I've read since Karl Ove Knausgaards "My Struggle" books.
Although the book might benefit from another, thorough, proofreading as there are still a few typos, it's nothing unheard of in an ebook and if you are into coming of age novels, you should buy this book, because this one is a real one.
This book showed me, personally, that what you give in kindness, you will get back at the most unexpected moments; it succeeded in making me, the natural sceptic, look for god's signs and messages. And, most importantly, made me want to walk, leave everything behind, and just walk.
This is a great book of great honesty. Go ahead, read it!
